Depression is a serious infliction that affects almost 15 million Americans every year. Make no mistake, it is a real disease. Even though it’s a mental illness, the afflicted is not responsible for it because of personal habits like laziness. Anyone can contract depression. There’s no logic to its onset. It can strike the rich or the poor. Race isn’t a factor. Strength or weakness isn’t a factor with this disease. The age-old stereotype that has been associated with a mental illness must be ignored. The suffering associated with this disease will only get worse without treatment. It will not simply go away if you ignore the symptoms. Untreated this illness will advance and will take over your life.

A few days of feeling sad or depressed does not mean depression. Depression can last for years, it’s a serious illness. According to various reports as many as fifteen million Americans suffer from this disease. And yet, sadly, only about 1/3 of those people seek medical care. It’s the mental illness stereotypes, things like the crazy eyed old man, that make people think twice before seeking treatment for depression. Of the list of progressive ailments depression is one of the worst. Without attention it will become more and more severe. It cannot be ignored.
